Executive summary
Gold ended October under pressure from expectations of tighter monetary policy, while physical-gold investment demand remained supported by substantial September ETF inflows. Spot-price reports from 30 October differ materially across timestamps; the price used for a transaction must therefore identify benchmark, fixing or spot quote, timezone and instrument. Direction: near-term financial-market weakness, mixed physical demand signals; moderate confidence in direction but no validated basis to claim a global shortage of fine gold.
Benchmark and price-basis discipline
Reuters reported spot gold at USD 3,980.40/troy oz at 11:07 GMT on 30 October and December COMEX futures near USD 3,991.10/oz at the same report time. A separate later 30 October Reuters report recorded spot USD 3,910.53/oz at 14:05 GMT. These observations are not contradictory after time alignment; neither should be relabelled as LBMA Gold Price PM. A 2 November early-Asian press snapshot reported spot near USD 3,898/oz but is not a verified London fix. Do not calculate a physical premium against any price without matching the pricing timestamp and benchmark definition.
Investment demand versus jewellery demand
World Gold Council reported global gold ETF inflows of USD 10bn in September 2026, bringing Q3 inflows to USD 31bn; global holdings rose by 67 tonnes in September to approximately 4,256 tonnes. These are investment holding/flow signals, not proof of immediate deliverable 1kg bar scarcity. WGC’s India market update on 20 October described improving festival and wedding demand and narrowing domestic discounts, while cautioning that high prices can constrain jewellery volumes. Investment and jewellery demand must remain separate in the trade narrative.
China, regional pricing and physical availability
WGC’s China update dated 15 October reported September central-bank purchases and continued ETF inflows, while noting a weaker jewellery backdrop. Neither China central-bank buying nor ETF flows establishes wholesale availability or scarcity in a particular vault. For an actual fine-gold proposal request: form (1kg or 400oz bars), fineness, accredited refiner, vault location, available-for-delivery status, chain of custody, export permissions, pricing reference and settlement mechanism. Published macro demand observations cannot substitute for that evidence.
Physical buyer and seller implications
Buyer: align benchmark fixing or spot valuation with the contractual pricing window; require refinery markings, assay, independent vault confirmation and legally coherent title-transfer and bank-payment steps. Seller: quote an explicit premium/discount against a named price with bar form, custody, delivery and fees; document whether proposed supply is allocated, unallocated or yet to be refined. Both: complete sanctions, AML, provenance and counterparty checks separately; reported physical premiums must be on like-for-like terms.
What to watch
Monitor independently verified LBMA AM/PM price series, spot versus dated futures, ETF flow releases, India demand/discounts, Shanghai wholesale premiums, exchange notices relative to open interest, and central-bank statements. An anecdotal dealer premium or one vault’s stock data is insufficient for a global-shortage conclusion.
